Ever wondered what it’s really like to live in poverty? Do you work to help members of our community who live in poverty? The Cost of Poverty Experience is a chance to walk in their shoes for an afternoon and develop a better understanding of their day-to-day lives. Get a glimpse into their reality — including the obstacles they encounter, the choices they face and the consequences they must live with.
This experience was enlightening in ways I did not anticipate. You really don’t know what people are going though until you see it first hand!
— Tracy Pell, COPE Attendee, 2017
What to Expect:
An experience that transforms your approach to poverty and equips you to help the poor without hurting them — or yourself.
Developed with low-income individuals who shared their story — expect to live their lives for an afternoon.
The Cost of Poverty Experience will be a powerful learning experience for:
Church leaders and congregation members considering their role in helping the poor. It’s perfect for those doing summer missions.
Churches and nonprofits who want to equip volunteers, donors and partners with a common approach to poverty.
Lake Highlands residents wrestling with how to respond to issues of poverty in the neighborhood.
Workers in education, healthcare, business and other sectors who want to find better ways to engage with people living in poverty.
The Cost of Poverty Experience is sponsored by Feed Lake Highlands, a faith-based program collaborating with neighbors and neighborhood organizations to provide food and other assistance to the residents of the Lake Highlands community in Dallas. Feed Lake Highlands was born from a ministry of Lake Highlands United Methodist Church.
