The problem of the HIV/AIDS epidemic can be overwhelming. This fatal disease has infected millions of people, left millions more orphaned, and it continues to spread. United Methodists are not quiet regarding this global crisis. We are there, comforting the sick and bringing healing and education to those within our reach. (United Methodist Committee on Relief).

Know the Facts

  • Globally, an estimated 33 million people live with HIV
  • 2.7 million new HIV infections occur each year
  • 22 million people live with HIV in Sub-Saharan Africa; 67 percent of all people living with HIV
  • Globally, women account for half of all HIV infections
  • Nearly three million people received antiretroviral treatment in low- and middle-income countries at the end of 2007.
  • 1.2 million people live with HIV in North America

The United Methodist Global AIDS Fund has supported 175 Christ-centered, church-oriented HIV & AIDS programs in 37 countries. Yet there is so much more work to be done to create an AIDS-free world.

World Aids Day - December 1, 2013

World AIDS Day is held on December 1 each year and is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV, and to commemorate people who have died. Lift up the AIDS issue this World AIDS Day. If you have questions, please write or call: lbales@umc-gbcs.org or 703-282-6254. Please think about ways you can promote this yearly event in your local congregation and/or community. It's so important.

20th International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2014) - July 2014

The biennial International AIDS Conference takes place July 2014 in Melbourne, Australia. It is the premier gathering for those working in the field of HIV, as well as policymakers, people living with HIV and others committed to ending the epidemic.

40 Days of Prayer for Victims of AidsA free, downloadable resource is available that offers 40 daily devotions leading up to World AIDS Day, typically Dec. 1. “40 Days of Prayers for Persons Affected & Living with HIV & AIDS” is a joint effort of the United Methodist Global AIDS Fund Committee and the General Board of Church & Society (GBCS).

The downloadable devotional resource is available on the GBCS website. This and other HIV & AIDS-related resources are also available through the GBCS store.


20 /20: Visioning An AIDS-Free World

20 /20: Visioning An AIDS-Free World is a new initiative of the UMC Global AIDS Fund Committee to lift up the importance of working to eradicate AIDS and mobilize funding to support global AIDS projects. Leading up to World AIDS Day, you are encouraged to promote this campaign.
